Dominican Life

Fifty-five (55%) percent of the Dominican population live in extreme poverty. There is a tremendous void in the availability of physician services, medicines, surgical and prosthetic equipment. Most Dominicans live in remote areas and almost never receive any medical care. The ratio of patients to doctors are approximately 12,000 to 1. This population faces major health issues, particularly parasitic infections, chronic dysentery due to contaminated food and water, malnutrition, pneumonia and multiple congenital deformities. Children routinely fail to receive necessary immunizations for Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Polio or Tuberculin skin testing.
